Approved by the President: April 18, 1988
Effective: Fall Semester 1988
Council approved, on April 18, a resolution establishing a policy concerning review of new faculty appointments. The intent of the policy is to insure that the tenure or rank offered to a candidate for appointment as new faculty is reviewed by the applicable departmental or divisional committee dealing with promotion, tenure and continued appointment.
Following is the text of the resolution as adopted by Council.
Whereas, a set of rigorous procedures is described in the FACULTY HANDBOOK for the evaluation of current faculty members who are being considered for promotion or tenure or continued appointment; and
Whereas, recommendations regarding the award or denial of promotion or tenure or continued appointment to current faculty members are made by committees having faculty representation; and
Whereas, the FACULTY HANDBOOK fails to provide for any review, by a committee with faculty representtion, of the tenure or rank offered to a candidate for appointment as a new faculty member, department head, or division director;
Let it be resolved, that a review and recommendation by the applicable departmental or divisional committee dealing with promotion, tenure and/or continued appointment shall be sought before a decision is made to extend to a prospective appointee a firm offer that includes the granting of tenure or continued appointment or the award of a rank higher than Assistant Professor.
