Policy on Sexual Harassment

The University Council, on January 4, unanimously approved a policy on sexual harassment developed by a task force of faculty, administrators, and staff and recommended by the Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Committee. Copies of the full policy have been distributed to Deans, Directors and Department Heads. [The policy is also available on the Administrative Information System, under Employee Relations.]

The new policy sets forth the University's commitment to "maintaining a working and study environment free of sexual harassment." It makes very clear that, "...it is the University's policy not to tolerate any verbal, nonverbal, or physical behavior which constitutes sexual harassment" and "Violations of the policy prohibiting sexual harassment may lead to disciplinary actions, including reprimands, suspension, or termination of employment or academic status."

The policy defines sexual harassment and spells out procedures for investigation of sexual harassment complaints. Under the procedures allegations of sexual harassment will be addressed swiftly and appropriately. The Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Office should be notified immediately whenever complaints are made or whenever there is reason to believe sexual harassment has occurred.
