Credit by Examination

Policy Memorandum No. 75

Recommended by Commission on Undergraduate Studies
Approved by University Council: March 2, 1987
Approved by the President: March 2, 1987
Effective: Immediately

This resolution makes small changes in the procedures for credit by examination, removing the required approval of the dean of the college and the student's academic dean as redundant requirements. The resolution, as adopted, reads (citations from Virginia Tech General Catalog in quotes):

Whereas, "credit, not to exceed 18 quarter hours, may be allowed by special examination where exceptional command of a subject can be demonstrated in lieu of formal course work," and

Whereas, "this privilege is not available to a student who has audited or enrolled previously in the same course, or has previously attempted credit by examination in the course," and

Whereas, "if credit by examination is deemed appropriate, the offering department shall have full responsibility for determining the type of examination to be given and what constitutes a passing grade," and

Whereas, "official approval must be obtained from the head of the department offering the course, the dean of the college containing the department, and the student's dean" and

Whereas, approval by "the dean of the college containing the department and the student's academic dean" serves only to verify that the student previously has not audited or enrolled in the course, and this verification should be the responsibility of the student, and

Whereas, verification of a previous audit or enrollment is conducted by the Graduation Analysis Department in the Registrar's Office;

Be It Therefore Resolved, that the approval of "the dean of the college containing the department and the student's academic dean" no longer be required, and

Be It Therefore Resolved, that students be informed on the "Credit by Exam ination" form that they may not receive credit by examination if they previously audited or enrolled in the course at any College/University or previously attempted credit by examination.
