New Provisions Related to the University Core Curriculum

The University Council approved two Resolutions on June 4 as a first of a series of actions to be taken in the implementation of the University's Core Curriculum. One of them, CUS Resolution 83-84 D, specifies the approved course options for the mathematical sciences area of the Core Curriculum. The other, CUS Resolution 83-84 E, adds two new provisions to the nine provisions set forth in Policy Memorandum No. 44, dated January 31, 1983, which called for the establishment of the University Core Curriculum.

  1. The "math" component of the Core Curriculum was recommended after having been carefully reviewed by the College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee, the Mathematical Sciences Area Committee, and the Core Curriculum Subcommittee of the Commission on Undergraduate Studies. Acting on those recommendations, Council approved the following options as constituting the Mathematical Sciences segment of the Core Curriculum until and unless those options are amended by further action of the Commission on Undergraduate Studies and the University Council:

    Courses currently in the University Catalog:

    OPTION I - Any three consecutive courses in the list: Math 1011, 1012, 1013, 2011, 2012, 2013

    OPTION II - Any two consecutive courses in the list: Math 1011, 1012, 1013, 2011, 2012, 2013; plus any three hours from the list: CS 1020 or 1070, or any Statistics at the 2000 level or above.*

    OPTION III - Math 1031-1032-1033

    OPTION IV - Math 1211 and at least four hours from the list: CS 1020 or 1070, Math 1212 or 1213, or any Statistics at the 2000 level or above.*

    OPTION V - Math 1521-1522 and any three hours from the list: CS 1020 or 1070, Math 1523 or 2520, or 3521, or any Statistics at the 2000 level or above.*

    OPTION VI** - MATH 1611-1612-1613

    SUBSTITUTIONS AMONG MATHEMATICS COURSES

    i) Math 1211 may be substituted for either Math 1013 or Math 1522, but not conversely.

    ii) Math 1521 may be substituted for Math 1011.

    iii) Math l011 and 1012 may be substituted for Math 1521.

    iv) Math 1013 and Math 1522 may be interchanged.

    v) Math 1523 and Math 2011 may be interchanged.

    vi) Math 1212 may be substituted for either Math 1523 or Math 2011, but not conversely.

    **OPTION VI meets the Core requirement in Mathematical Sciences ONLY for students seeking the B.A.Ed. degree in elementary education.

    The mathematical sciences core elements are the first ones submitted to University Council; there will be others in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, for approval by Council before the Core Curriculum will be in place in the fall of 1985. The math elements constitute no substantive changes over courses as they are now presented. Mathematics requirements over and above those set forth in the Core Curriculum, of course, may be added at the college or departmental level, as long as the Core Curriculum requirement is met.

  2. The second Resolution adds the following two provisions to the nine provisions which were set forth in Policy Memorandum No. 44 and which constitute the original University Core Curriculum legislation:

    10) In order to provide for quality control and for appropriate evolution with coherence in the core curriculum, core course sequences and clusters are subject to periodic review by the appropriate committee and must be re-endorsed for inclusion in the core curriculum by the Commission on Undergraduate Studies every four years. Following initial endorsement of sequences and clusters by the CUS, review and re-endorsement dates will be staggered in order to avoid overloading the area committees every fourth year.

    11) A complete file of up-to-date syllabi for all approved core sequences and clusters in each of the five subject areas shall be maintained in the Office of the University Provost. The maintenance of those files shall be the responsibility of the respective area committees, with the assistance of the Provost's Office staff.

These new provisions added to Policy Memorandum No. 44 provide that the same review process for reapprovals of the Core Curriculum will be followed as was used in the original approvals; that is, the departments, the college, the area committee, and the Commission on Undergraduate Studies will look at each course every four years. The second provision (11) simply provides for recordkeeping.
