The University Council recently approved a Resolution designating the Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EO/AA) Advisory Committee as a University Committee. In a subsequent meeting, Council approved a change in its Constitution to give ex officio membership on the Commission on Student Affairs to the Chairperson of the Black Organizations Council.
Recommended by the Commission on Student Affairs
Approved by University Council: November 15, 1982
Approved by the President: November 15, 1982
Effective: See below
Recognizing that the enrollment of black students at Virginia Tech has increased to a total of 735, that there are now nine recognized black student organizations at the University, and that it is desirable to include the perspective of black students in the governance system for student life, the Commission on Student Affairs recommended that it offer membership to the Chairperson of the Black Organizations Council. Because the Black Organizations Council is not yet recognized by the University, the representative will serve without vote until formal recognition of the Black Organizations Council is accorded, at which time the representative will be granted voting privileges. Although this change will require an amendment to the Constitution of the University Council, it is to be put into effect immediately, and ratification by the Board of Visitors will be sought at a later date.
