Proposal to Modify the Faculty Handbook Policy on Emeritus Status

The University Council, on recommendation of the Commissionon Administrative and Professional Faculty Affairs, unanimously approved a resolution concerning a Proposal to Modify the Faculty Handbook Policy on Emeritus Status.

Following is the text of the resolution as adopted by University Council.

WHEREAS,extension agent faculty are located in each county and most cities of Virginia, conducting non-formal education on behalf of the university, and;

WHEREAS,the land-grant mission of Virginia Tech is fulfilled for the people of the Commonwealth through the work of extension agent faculty who deliver to the people knowledge generated by the university, and;

WHEREAS, Senior Extension Agents have earned the senior designation through a rigirous peer review process, and;

WHEREAS,the Faculty Handbook currently does not specify that senior extension agent faculty are eligible for emeritus status;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the Faculty Handbook language pertaining to emeritus status which presently states:

"The title of emeritus is conferred on retired full professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians with continued appointment, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the University and who are specifically recommended to the Board of Visitors by the President and approved. Their names are carried in the University Catalog until death."

be amended to state the following:

"The title of emeritus is conferred on retired full professors and associate professors, administrative officers, extra-collegiate faculty with continued appointment, senior extension agents, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the University, and who are specifically recommended to the Board of Visitors by the President and approved. Their names are carried in the University Catalog until death."
