The University Council, on recommendation of the Commission on Student Affairs, unanimously approved a resolution concerning the Chairperson Election Process for that Commission. This resolution allows the possiblity of a student member being elected Chair.
Following is the text of the resolution as adopted by University Council:
WHEREAS, the Commission on Student Affairs is convened to address student affairs and,
WHEREAS, the majority of the Commission members are students and,
WHEREAS, a student may represent the concerns of students with special passion and tenacity and,
WHEREAS, not all Commission chairs are faculty members, since the Chair of the Commission on Classified Staff Affairs is a member of the classified staff and,
WHEREAS, excluding students from the list of candidates for chair of the Commission on Student Affairs suggests that students are unable to adequately represent the decisions of the Commission,
THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED, that the Chair of the Commission on Student Affairs will be elected from the membership of the Commission on Student Affairs by the full membership of the Commission on Student Affairs.
And, THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED, that the Constitution and Bylaws of the University be changed accordingly:

Section 4. Election of Chair
The chair shall be a member of the non-administrative faculty and staff members of the commission EXCEPT AS NOTED BELOW. (Professional faculty representatives are elibigle to serve as chair.) The Vice President of the Faculty Senate shall be the chair of the Commission on Faculty Affairs. The Vice President of the Staff Senate shall be the chair of the Commission on Staff Affairs. The chair of the Commission on Administrative and Professional Faculty Affairs shall be elected from among the elected administrative and professional faculty members. The chair of the Commission on Student Affairs shall be elected from among the commission membership.

PROPOSED STATEMENT: *THE CHAIR WILL BE ELECTED FROM AMONG THE NON-ADMINISTRATIVE FACULTY, STAFF, GRADUATE STUDENT AND UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION BY THE COMMISSION MEMBERSHIP.
