Tenure Process as it Relates to Instructors/Lecturers

Policy Memorandum No. 104

Recommended by the Commission on Faculty Affairs
Approved by University Council: December 4, 1989
Approved by the President: December 4, 1989
Effective: Immediately

The University Council, on recommendation by the Commission on Faculty Affairs, unanimously approved a resolution which permits Virginia Tech instructors or lecturers who are appointed to tenure-track positions to discount the period spent as an instructor/lecturer from the probationary period of service, upon recommendation of the department head or chair and dean.

Following is the text of the resolution as adopted by Council.

Whereas, faculty are occasionally appointed to instructorship or lectureship positions in which they are ineligible for tenure consideration and,

Whereas, their professional development is often hampered either by job responsibilities which do not provide such opportunity or by requirements of completion of the terminal degree and,

Whereas, such faculty later may be appointed as Assistant Professor with eligibility for consideration for tenure and,

Whereas, under current policy their service as Instructor or Lecturer must be included in the limited time of probationary service, in contrast to colleagues who may have had similar service at other institutions,

Therefore, it is resolved that the following changes be made in University policy as it appears in the FACULTY HANDBOOK:

In section 2.7.2, add a new paragraph following the second paragraph:

"Faculty appointed at the rank of Instructor or Lecturer under conditions or with credentials which are stated specifically as not providing for consideration for a tenured appointment and who subsequently are appointed to a position as Assistant Professor with eligibility for consideration for a tenured appointment may request of the Provost, on recommendation of the department head or chair and the dean, that the service as Instructor or Lecturer not be included as part of their probationary period. Such a request must be made at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor."

In section 2.3.1, add at the end:

"(See also Section 2.7.2)."

In section 2.4.1, add to the third sentence:

". . ., except as provided in Section 2.7.2."
